When To See an Emergency Dentist

Know the warning signs that you need urgent dental care.

If you were faced with a dental emergency what would you do? If you said “head to the ER” then you may want to read a little further. While an ER may be helpful if you are dealing with bleeding that just won’t quit, you may be surprised to learn that our family dentist Dr. Spencer Luke offers emergency dentistry to patients living in and around Salt Lake City, UT. Instead of taking an expensive trip to the ER, why not see an emergency dentist instead?

Here’s when to turn to our Salt Lake City, UT, dental team for emergency dentistry.

You have a toothache

Yes, even a simple toothache is considered a dental emergency. A toothache can be a sign of a cavity, infection, or injury so you must seek proper medical attention to prevent the problem from spreading. Remember, a tooth cannot heal itself but we can remove decay, place fillings, and even place a dental crown over damaged teeth to protect them.

Your tooth is loose

While a loose tooth may be normal, or even exciting for a child, this is anything but exciting for an adult. Everything from an injury to gum disease can lead to loose teeth, so you must see a dentist right away. We want to be able to save the tooth so this is why you must come into the office as soon as possible so we can figure out what’s causing your loose tooth, treat the problem, and prevent it from getting worse.

You have an abscess

Have you noticed a pimple-like bump on your gums? If so, this is a sign of an infection that has spread to the roots of the tooth. If left untreated this infection can cause irreparable damage to your teeth and jawbone. An abscess may be accompanied by swelling, pus, a bad taste in your mouth, and a fever. Our dental professionals can easily drain and treat an abscess here in our Salt Lake City, UT, office.

Your jaw is swollen

Our dental team doesn’t just treat problems that affect the teeth and gums, we can also treat infections that affect the jaws and face. Therefore, if you notice jaw swelling this could be a sign of an infection (most likely in the salivary gland). If you develop a fever or have trouble breathing then this is a reason to head to your local ER; however, if you’re simply dealing with jaw swelling you should give us a call right away.

Still not sure whether you should turn to our dental team here in Salt Lake City, UT, for emergency dentistry? Don’t hesitate to call Lakeside Dental at (801) 596-3000 right away. We can talk over your symptoms and determine how quickly we need to get you in for an appointment.
